Abstract |
Population estimates of the average levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (dioxins or PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (furans or PCDF) were established using 865 human adipose tissue specimens collected in Fiscal Year 1987 through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Human Adipose Tissue Survey (NHATS). The specimens were composited into 48 unique samples prior to chemical analysis. Estimates of the national average concentrations of levels were made among subpopulations defined by the donors' geographic adipose tissue of the U.S. population was 5.38 pg/g (+ or - 0.32); however, the levels increase from 1.98 pg/g (+ or - 0.81) in children under 14 years of age to 9.40 pg/g (+ or - 0.38) in adults over 45 years old. Significant age effects were determined for all nine of the compounds which were present at quantifiable levels in greater than 90% of all samples. Statistically significant differences based on geographic regions were determined for estimated levels of 2,3,4,7,8-PCCDF with the highest levels in the northeast and the lowest levels in the west. There were no significant differences in the estimated levels from different sexes or race groups for any of the target analytes. |
