"A chemical spill of rubber accelerator occurred in September 1998, on Route 460 near Cedar Bluff, Virginia when a tanker truck overturned. Glycogen (mg/g WW) was measured in mantle tissue of rainbow mussels (Villosa iris) relocated to 1 upstream site and 2 sites downstream of the spill location. Sampling occurred over 4 sample dates. There were no significant differences in the mean glycogen levels of the mussels among sites (p=0.38), indicating that the river reach affected by the toxic spill is now seemingly suitable for the restoration of mussels. The maximum, minimum, and mean ages of mussels killed at the site were determined for ... 14 mussel species.... Ages of the various mussel species ranged from 4-70+ yr, with populations of each species containing individuals ranging in age from young (<10 yr) to old, indicating that most mussel populations affected by the spill were mature and experiencing recent recruitment."--Abstract.
