Abstract
This volume focuses on mercury control technologies, costs, and financial impact estimates for four industries; municipal waste combustors, medical waste incinerators, utility boilers, and chlor-alkali plants. Control technologies reviewed for feasibility are pollution prevention measures (including product substitution and process modification), materials separation, and flue gas treatment methods. Analysis of Clean Air Act Authorities that could be used to control mercury emission sources are summarized. Specific technological approaches to limiting mercury emissions for these four industries are described along with data needed to improve these assessments. Existing Federal and State Control Programs to control mercury uses, releases, and exposures are described. Additional alternative to managing mercury emissions are described and include: pollution prevention measures (e.g., product substitution, process modification, and materials separations); coal cleaning, alternative approaches and flue gas treatment technologies.
