Abstract |
The National Pretreatment Program as implemented under the Clean Water Act (CWA) and General Pretreatment Regulations (40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 403) is designed to control the introduction of nondomestic wastes to Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTWs). The specific objectives of the Program are to protect POTWs from pass through and interference, to protect the receiving waters and to improve opportunities to recycle sludges. To accomplish these objectives, the program relies on National categorical standards, prohibited discharge standards and local limits. Part 1 of the document provides background information on pollutant levels in residential wastewater and in wastewaters from commercial sources, and characterizes toxic pollutant discharges from these sources. Residential and commercial source monitoring data summarized in Part 1 are intended to supplement similar data found in the 1987 local limits guidance. |
