Abstract | The paper reports the results of a study conducted in several steel producing communities during and immediately following the steel strike of July, 1956. Since the decision to undertake this study was made the day after the strike started, measurement of pollutant levels under normal operating conditions had to be made after the strike was settled and the plants were once again operating at full capacity. With only a short time available to prepare for the sampling program, the study was limited to the following communities: Homestead, McKeesport, Pittsburgh, and Donora, Pa.; East Chicago, Ind.; and Birmingham, Ala.
