Abstract
Research into Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) for use in drinking water treatment has a long history in the Drinking Water Research Division and its predecessor organizations. Studies were conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service in the late fifties and early sixties to examine the use of GAC. Passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986 has identified GAC to be a baseline technology against which all other technologies must be measured for the removal of SOCs from drinking water. The various aspects of the USEPA's Drinking Water Research Division's GAC research program are discussed. First the bench and pilot scale studies devoted to the application of GAC will be presented. The results from field scale studies and the possible use of GAC for disinfection by-products precursor removal will be discussed. Isotherms have been discovered to be a very useful tool for preliminary design of GAC systems. Modeling techniques verified by field studies has proven to be very useful in predicting the full performance of GAC systems.
