Abstract
An investigation was undertaken to scale-up a partial oxidation reactor to evaluate the potential for producing an ammonia synthesis gas from cattle feedlot residue. The synthesis gas from the reactor can be further processed to produce ammonia using existing, commercial technology. During this phase of the study, a 2.5 meter long, falling-bed reactor was designed, constructed, and operated along with supporting feed and recovery equipment; manure feed rates to the reactor ranged from 7.7 to 23.6 kilograms per hour. The results show that significant yields of an ammonia synthesis gas and ethylene can be produced in the same reactor when the system is fed with a mixture of air, steam, and manure. This study and earlier bench-scale experiments show that the product gases are compatible with both ethylene and ammonia synthesis gas production.
