The 131-acre active landfill overlies two aquifers and neighbors private homes that obtain their drinking water from private domestic wells. Municipal solid waste, refuse, debris, and septic system waste from residential, industrial, and commercial sources have been disposed of at the site since 1963. From the early 1960s to 1985 Cell 1 received approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of municipal waste and septic sludges. Subsequent ground water monitoring revealed a contaminated plume migrating from Cell 1 toward a nearby cove. Cell 1 was closed and partially capped in 1985, and a storm water diversion system was also installed to collect storm water and recharge it. Cell 2, which was equipped with a leachate collection system and accepted approximately 80,000 tons of municipal waste annually, has been closed since October 1989. The first of two planned operable units addresses source control through remediation of Cell 1 and the former sludge lagoons. A subsequent Record of Decision will address ground and surface water contamination. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and sludge are VOCs, other organics including PAHs, metals including arsenic and lead, and other inorganics. |
