Abstract | Interest in the filamentous, sheathed bacteria of The genus Sphaerotilus stems, in part, from their ability to grow in large masses in water courses which impair the recreational and other uses of water courses. Sphaerotilus species are also associated with failures in the treatment of waste waters by the activated sludge method in which the filaments of Sphaerotilus have been thought to interfere with the settling of the flocs. The report describes investigations on the growth of Sphaerotilus natans in continuous flow cultures. |
