Abstract |
The Consortium for Site Characterization Technology (CSCT) as established a formal program to accelerate acceptance and application of innovative monitoring and site characterization technologies that improve the way the nation manages its environmental problems. In 1995 the CSCT conducted a demonstration of two in situ laser-induced fluorescence-based technologies using the Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) cone penetrometer testing (CPT) platform. The two technologies were the Rapid Optical Screening Tool (trademark) (ROST (trademark)) developed by Loral Corporation and Dakota Technologies, Inc., and the SCAPS LIF, developed through a collaborative effort of the Army, Navy, and Air Force under the Tri-Services SCAPS program and by the Naval Command, Control, and Ocean Surveillance Center, Research, Development Test, and Evaluation (NCCOSC RDT&E) Division. These technologies were designed to provide rapid sampling and real-time, relatively low-cost analysis of the physical and chemical characteristics of subsurface soil to distinguish contaminated and noncontaminated areas. Results for the SCAPS LIF and CPT performance evaluation are presented in a separate report. The purpose of this Innovative Technology Verification Report (ITVR) is to document the demonstration activities and present and evaluate the demonstration data in order to verify the performance of the ROST (trademark) LIF sensing technology relative to developer claims as presented in the approved demonstration plan. |
