Abstract |
The objective of this project was to examine the removal of algae cells and other suspended solids contained in the effluents from facultative lagoons treating domestic wastewaters by means of rock filters. Two rock filters were constructed and operational over a 16 month period to determine the operating characteristics of the rock filter systems. Both rock filters removed essentially the same amount of suspended solids but the small rock filter clogged after 11 months operation. Biological activity within the rock filter was noted by the changes in dissolved oxygen concentrations. The data indicated that it was not possible to obtain effluent suspended solids concentrations below the desired 30 mg/l for municipal wastewater treatment systems. The BOD5 concentrations in the effluents from the rock filters were consistently below the 30 mg/l effluent criteria. |
