This report summarizes the application of a homology mapping technique to aid the selection of cities for photochemical modeling the purpose of which is to assess the effects of Heat Island Reduction Initiative (HIRI) measures on ozone air quality. An urban heat island occurs when the temperature within a city is warmer than the surrounding area. It is an example of inadvertent climate modification. Higher temperatures within an urban area have the potential to adversely influence ozone air quality through higher temperatures, faster photochemical reaction rates, and greater emissions. Thus, EPA is investigating the effectiveness of urban heat island reduction as an ozone mitigation strategy.
