Abstract |
The objective of the study was to determine whether air pollution affects serum levels of immunoglobulins to a different degree in smokers than in nonsmokers. The sera tested were obtained from army recruits in the Chicago area, 517 smokers and 147 nonsmokers. The smokers and nonsmokers were further categorized by geographic location and by the presence of cough and phlegm. Quantitative determination of levels of IgA, IgG, IgM, and C3 in the samples of sera were by the method of single radial immunodiffusion described by Fahey and McKelvey. The results indicated that no significant differences existed between the mean concentrations of immunoglobulins when smokers were compared to nonsmokers by geographic location, nor were there significant differences between smokers with cough and phlegm and those without. |
