Abstract | The report describes Phase II of an investigation to determine, by gravity separation technique, the extent to which the sulfur content of Illinois coals can be reduced and to study other washability characteristics. Twenty-seven mine samples were obtained, crushed to a top size of 3/8 inch, screened to 3/8 inch x 28 mesh, and separated into several specific gravity fractions which were subsequently analyzed. It was found that only 5 of the 27 samples came from mines that could produce coal with less than 1.5 percent total sulfur, and these 5 samples were from mines with relatively low sulfur content in the raw coal.
