Abstract |
The document serves as EPA guidance for providing information when it becomes necessary to develop or obtain alternate water supplies where releases of hazardous substances or pollutants have resulted in the closing of drinking water wells or has contaminated a principal drinking water supply. The information was prepared to assist Superfund contractors and on-scene Federal, State, and local officials with the planning and implementation of alternate water supplies at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Guidance is specifically provided for those sites that do not require a time-critical removal action, but do require provision of an alternate water supply as either a non-time-critical removal actions of 6 months or more or a remedial action before implementation of a final remedy can be achieved (actions performed at National Priority List sites where short-term threats to the human population exist). These remedial actions are used to provide faster response than can be achieved with normal remedial actions. The decision-making process used in the document discusses the determination of water supply needs, screening and evaluating alternatives, and implementing the remedy. |
