Abstract | Selected scientific information through early 1986 is presented and evaluated relative to the health and welfare effects associated with exposure to ozone and other photochemical oxidants. Data on health and welfare effects are emphasized; additional information is provided for understanding the oxidant pollution problem, for evaluating the reliability of effects data, and for assessing effects data relative to concentration occurring in ambient air. Information is also presented on exposure-related topics: sources, measurement, and concentrations of oxidant precursors; formation and transport of ozone and other photochemical oxidants; properties, chemistry, and measurement of ozone and other photochemical oxidants; and the concentrations of ozone and other photochemical oxidants typically found in ambient air. The specific areas addressed by chapters on health and welfare effects are the toxicological appraisal of effects of ozone and other oxidants; effects observed in controlled human exposures; effects observed in field and epidemiological studies; and effects on vegetation, natural and agroecosystems, and nonbiological materials. |
