Contents Notes | The poster's central panel depicts three geisha women seated around a table, one doing calculations using squared rods called "sangi" on a rectangular grid ("sangi board") and another doing calculations with a "soroban," a modified Chinese abacus. Columns on outer left and right show the development of the soroban, and examples of its use in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The text box at the bottom outlines the history of these devices, and explains how the calculations are done on a soroban. |
