Abstract | The objectives of this project were to analyze mine tailings from the Pacific Northwest for teal content and potential mobility of metal content. As metals can be involved in numerous reactions, such as dissolution/precipitation, organic complexation, surface sorption, redox, or microbial transformations, metals will be extracted using a sequential extraction procedure in order to characterize soluble and more readily released metals compared to bound and immobile metals. Mineralogy of the tailings will also be examined for comparison with extractable metals. Mineralogy of the tailings will also be examined for comparison with extractable metals. In addition, equilibrium diagrams will be used to compare some soluble metals with metal activities of various minerals at equilibrium. |
