Abstract |
Three healthy, adult male, albino rabbits were used. Each animal was shaved over an area approximately 10 cm. by 6 cm. on each side two days previous to the test. This lapse of time allowed the healing of any irritation of the skin due to the shaving. Just previous to the test, the animals were secured on racks so that the shaved areas would to exposed and the fore and hind paws held in order to eliminate any scatching or licking of the test areas. An area one inch square was marked off on each shaven side of the rabbits. One inch square swatches were cut from J and J 12 ply surgical game. Three of these were immersed in the compound to be tested so that they were thoroughly impregnated with the compound and were then drained and placed in contact with the skin of the animal over the previously marked area. The right side of each rabbit was used for the test compound. The left side of each rabbit for control purposes was similarly treated with swatches which had been immersed in l% Liquor Cresclis Sapponatus J.S.P. The swatches were allowed to remain in contact with the skin for fifteen minutes after which time they were removed. The animals were retained on the racks for at least two hours thereafter to prevent them from licking or scratching the test area. After this time, they were returned to their cages and observed. |
