The gap between the number of LUST sites being identified in the State UST/LUST programs versus those being remediated continues to widen, and as a result, more and more cleanup technologies are coming to the table to help 'streamline' the remediation process. Many remediation technologies are quite successful, can achieve the required cleanup levels mandated by most State programs. However, one problem not getting adequately addressed, involves the remediation of contamination in fractured media. In an effort to better understand the problem, EPA (Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory) conducted a national survey in November 1992. The survey was comprised of a list of questions that focused on the technical issues encountered when conducting site assessments, corrective actions, and site monitoring at LUST sites involving fractured media contamination. Highlights of the most significant issues identified by the survey are presented in the paper. |
