Abstract |
This report summarizes the results of a characterization and treatment feasibility test program undertaken to develop optimum means of handling and disposal of residual sludges from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) treatment systems. Desk top engineering reviews were also conducted to gather, analyze and evaluate pertinent information relating to pump/bleedback of the treatment residuals to the dry-weather sludge handling/treatment and disposal facilities. The results indicate that the CSO sludge volume and quality vary widely. Characterization data including heavy metals and pesticides concentrations for eight CSO sludge residual samples collected across the nation are presented in the report. Unit treatment process of centrifugation in conjunction with gravity or flotation thickening was concluded to be the optimum dewatering technique for on-site treatment of CSO residuals. |
