Abstract | The 7,400-acre Naval Air Engineering Center (NAEC) site is located in Jackson and Manchester Townships, Ocean County, New Jersey, approximately 14 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Navy assumed control of the property in 1919, and it was formally commissioned Naval Air Station (NAS) Lakehurst in 1921. The NAEC was moved from the Naval Base, Philadelphia to NAS Lakehurst in 1974. Historically, various operations at NAEC have required the use, handling, storage, and occasional onsite disposal of hazardous substances. The ROD addresses an interim remedy for the principal threat at the site, migration of the contaminated groundwater plume from Areas A and B. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and ground water at the site are VOCs, including benzene, PCE, TCE, toluene, and xylenes; other organics including PAHs and PCBs; and metals. |
