Abstract | A wide variety of candidate gas turbine cycles was evaluated for application to automobile propulsion. Simple cycles, regenerated and recuperated cycles, cycles including intercooling and reheat, single-shaft and free-turbine engines, and a combined gas turbine and Rankine cycle were evaluated over a range of pressure ratios and turbine inlet temperatures for an initial total of 60 separate candidate cycles. Following a preliminary evaluation on the basis of total lifetime costs of all designs, three leading candidates were chosen for more detailed analysis -- a simple cycle, a regenerated cycle, and a recuperated cycle, all of which were single-shaft designs.
