Abstract |
Increasingly, State, local, and Federal agencies are finding that citizen volunteers are valuable partners in programs to monitor and protect our Nation's water resources. The EPA has developed the manual to present specific information on volunteer lake water quality monitoring methods. The manual begins by summarizing the steps necessary to plan and manage a volunteer monitoring program, including setting general goals, identifying the uses and users of collected data, and establishing sound quality assurance procedures. The manual discusses three parameters most commonly used by volunteer monitoring programs to measure the algal condition of a lake: Secchi disk transparency (a measure of water clarity and, indirectly, of algal density); chlorophyll a (a more reliable indicator of algal density); and total phosphorus (a measure of water fertility). Ideally, all three should be measured in a monitoring program. Step-by-step instructions are provided on sampling procedures. The manual concludes with advice on how to present volunteer-collected data. |
