Abstract |
The overall objectives of this research effort were to identify compounding and fabricating industries from a selected number of Standard Industrial Classification codes, and identify the environmental impact resulting from processing steps used by fabrication or compounding industries. Industries in the United States fall into two basic categories -- those that process primary raw material such as iron ore, logs, silica sand, animal hide, etc., and those that fabricate or compound these raw materials into various consumer goods. This report assesses the potential environmental impact of industries in the second category, the compounding and fabricating industries. The basic approach was to classify each industry by type and major unit processes supported, and then to characterize the waste streams produced by the unit processes. Examples of industries that are classified as compounding and fabricating industries are the automobile industry and the surface coating industry. (Portions of this document are not fully legible) |
