The United States Steel Corporation has proposed to construct a new blast furnace as part of a modernization program at the Fairfield Works in Jefferson County, Alabama. The iron produced by this unit, estimated to be 1,825,999 tons per year, will enable the company to maintain current production following shut down of antiquated equipment. The draft EIS addresses the existing air quality of Jefferson County Alabama and the existing water quality of Valley Creek and Village Creek, the streams receiving wastewater discharged by U.S. Steel. Modeling of the air emissions and water discharge from the proposed new source predict the potential impacts of the proposed new source.
