The report was prepared as part of the Ohio River Basin Energy Study (ORBES), a multidisciplinary policy research program. It represents the final technical report summarizing land use and terrestrial ecology data and analyses conducted for the study. The ORBES region consists of all of Kentucky, most of West Virginia, and substantial portions of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. This l22 million acre region has a variety of land uses, which are summarized here. Also discussed is the terrestrial ecology of the region (climate, physiography, soils, flora, fauna, and ecosystem dynamics). For the various ORBES energy development scenarios, land use conversion due to energy-related use was calculated, and impacts on terrestrial ecology were determined by application of the terrestrial ecosystem assessment methodology developed for ORBES.
