Abstract
Approximately 30 aquatic habitat assessment techniques were summarized and compared to provide information to watershed and nonpoint pollution control managers. Most methods have been developed by Federal or state agencies and have had greatest application in the western United States. They are classified according to a number of mutually interacting categories such as impact assessment, inventory and general description, salmonid or non-salmonid streams, particular fish species orientation, channel stability, transect, and biotic indices. Many of the methods have developed indices or numerical values which can be used for comparisons or evaluation.
