Abstract | The report describes a study to identify cold-cathode gas discharge devices used for educational purposes that may emit X-radiation. In addition to cold-cathode X-ray tubes, a number of other gas discharge devices were found to emit X-rays. A summary of laboratory measurements of the X-ray outputs from these tubes is presented. Recommendations are given regarding use of the tubes, based on these experimental data. Specific comments are directed to the science teacher utilizing the equipment, the distributor, and State or local radiological health agencies. (Author) |
