The report gives results of research to determine if the co-firing of coal with municipal solid waste (MSW) will decrease the downstream formation of chlorinated organic compounds, particularly polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDDs and PCDFs). Previous research had suggested that sulfur present in coal can interfere in PCDD/PCDF formation mechanisms. To test this hypothesis, both bench- and pilot-scale experiments simulating MSW incineration were carried out. Tests were conducted with a MSW fly ash in EPA's pilot-scale Innovative Furnace Reactor (IFR) and a bench-scale Short Time Differential Reactor (STDR). The IFR tests involved either natural gas or coal combustion, with MSW fly ash being injected into the post-combustion region of the furnace.
