Abstract | The Gallaway Ponds site is located 2.3 miles northeast of Gallaway, Fayette County, TN. The site lies near a ridge extensively mined for sand and gravel, producing a landscape dotted with water-filled pits up to 50 feet deep. Disposal of hazardous materials probably occurred in the 1970s or early 1980s. In 1983, the EPA conducted an emergency cleanup of Pond 1, consisting of the excavation and offsite disposal of contaminated sludges and the onsite treatment of the water in the pond. The primary contaminants of concern include: pesticides, inorganics, chlordane, and toxaphene. The selected remedial action includes: excavation, proper site closure, dilution of water to meet Ambient Water Quality Criteria, institutional controls, ground water monitoring and inspection and maintenance of the cap. The estimated capital cost is $344,735 with 30-year O&M present worth costs of $163,265. |
