Abstract |
The report gives results of a study to assess the utility of porous polymer adsorbents as a means of sampling and concentrating trace organic emissions from stationary sources. Emissions from two industrial field sites were sampled, using small porous polymer sampling tubes backed up by a cryogenic thermal-gradient sampling system to assess the efficiencies of adsorption of the trace organic species. In addition to experimental results, conclusions, and recommendations, a detailed statement of the problem of sampling trace organics in industrial emissions is presented in the Appendices. This later discussion includes: the characteristics of stationary sources emitting organic species; an assessment of present sampling techniques for organic matter; a review of the use of porous polymer adsorbents in sampling; and the characteristics of porous polymer sorbents and their potential limiting properties. |
