Abstract |
A laboratory investigation has been made of a modified copper smelting process which provides a solution to the sulfur dioxide air pollution problem. Preliminary economic evaluation of the process appears favorable with good prospects for further improvements when compared with conventional processes provided with equivalent air pollution abatement capabilities. The process would involve (1) neutral roasting of pyritic copper concentrates to convert the contained iron into an acid-soluble form with evolution of some elemental sulfur in this step, (2) hydrochloric acid leaching of the roasted concentrate to disolve the iron with simultaneous hydrogen sulfide generation and production of an enriched copper sulfide residue, (3) converting the copper sulfide residue to blister copper by conventional means, (4) reducing the sulfur dioxide formed in the converting step to elemental sulfur with hydrogen sulfide from the leaching step, and (5) processing the iron chloride leach solution to regenerate hydrochloric acid and to yield a marketable iron oxide. |
