Abstract
The objective is to determine baseline levels of platinum and palladium in the population and environment prior to wide-spread use of catalyst-equipped vehicles. Lead is determined to ascertain the future epidemiological effect of non-leaded gasoline. The report presents the results of an epidemiological study of populations living near a freeway in Los Angeles, California, and in the high desert region of Lancaster, California, for concentrations of platinum, palladium, and lead in blood, urine, hair, feces, autopsy tissues, ambient air, surface water and soil. Platinum and palladium are determined in samples from miners in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and metal refinery workers in New Jersey. Analytical methods are developed for platinum, palladium, and lead using atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
