ABSTRACT: The handbook consolidates literature on colorants used in foods, drugs, and cosmetics in the United States. Information is presented in three parts: 1) a general background on color additives which includes history and regulation and lists of currently permitted colorants, their description, properties, areas of use, and specification; 2) procedures for colorant analysis covering identification, strength, moisture, metals, insolubles, inorganic salts, and colored and colorless impurities; 3) the resolution of mixes and analysis of commercial products which provides background to deal with all colorant situations. Some recently delisted colorants are included if they were delisted after publication or they currently exist in some products. |
