Abstract | The software program implements the 'Avian Richness Evaluation Method' (AREM), a standardized procedure for estimating the bird species composition and richness of lowland wetlands of the Colorado Plateau. AREM gives quantitative, site-specific predictions of bird species composition and richness, rather than a value rating for habitat generally or for supposed 'indicator' species. Surveys of 76 wetlands verified its accuracy. AREM can be used for quantifying mitigation credits, diagnosing impaired wetland quality, selecting indicator species, targeting habitat enhancements, and optimizing biodiversity. Evaluations take <30 minutes; software can be modified by non-programmers to include other regions and taxa other than birds. |
