The application of operations research to the analysis of solid waste collection systems was studied. Models and techniques for facility location and routing are discussed and extended. Three different types of problem areas are viewed. Facility location, in particular the location of transfer facilities within a large-scale system was covered. The finding of optimal flow through given systems with added constraints is also discussed. One chapter is concerned with vehicle scheduling problems where routes are to be found for individual collection vehicles among various tasks. Finally, the analysis of an actual large-scale solid waste collection system, that of Baltimore, Maryland, is carried out using some of the methods developed. (Author Modified Abstract) |
