Abstract
A two mgd teritary treatment plant for chemical and physical treatment of activated sludge effluent has been built and tested at Santee, California. The plant demonstrated the removal of phosphorus by lime addition and tertiary filtration in a full scale treatment plant operated under typical field conditions. The plant has a design capacity of two mgd. Laboratory and field studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of three tertiary waste treatment processess on the amount of algal growth in the effluent after treatment. The studies included determination of the absolute levels of algal growth under controlled conditions (Algal Assay Procedure and continuous culture), and comparison with field observations in special study ponds. In addition, determinations of the growth limiting nutrients in each effluent were made. (Author Modified Abstract)
