Abstract | Data from continuous cultures of an alga (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) and protozoan (Tetrahymena vorax) have been used to construct a model of algal standing crop over ranges of light intensity, dilution rate, and nutrient concentration both in the absence and presence of predation by the protozoa. The model predicts that predation can reduce algal standing crop only within certain ranges of the environmental variables. The comparative toxicities of Aroclor 1242, a polychlorinated bipheny1, and DDT, were tested on the alga and protozoan, and also on daphnids, ostracods, and guppies. (Modified author abstract) |
