Abstract
The 115-acre Spiegelberg Landfill site is an active sand, peat, and gravel mining site in Green Oak Township, Livingston County, Michigan. From 1966 to 1977, a 2.5-acre portion of the site was used to dispose of septic, domestic, and industrial wastes, including paint sludge. Site investigations revealed two areas of concern, a paint sludge disposal area, Operable Unit I (OU I) and a ground water plume (OU II), contaminated as a result of the paint sludge disposal area. The second ROD focuses on the resulting ground water plume, which is estimated to contain 3,770,000 cubic feet of contaminated ground water. Although the contaminated ground water plume has not yet migrated beyond the site boundary, continued migration of the plume poses a threat to water supply wells north and northwest of the site. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including benzene, toluene, and xylenes; and metals including lead.
