Abstract |
The EPA conducted a number of studies to identify the magnitude and causes of reported differences between the fuel economies of in-use production vehicles and certification vehicles as reported in the Mileage Guide. The purpose of the study reported herein was to investigate through a modest test program the magnitude of the differences (if any) in fuel economy between production and certification vehicles when both types of vehicles are tested at equivalent mileage (4000 miles) and state of time on the dynamometer using the Standard Federal Test Procedure. The program was experimentally directed toward the highest fuel economy vehicles represented in the Mileage Guide and was not designed to be representative of the wide range of model offerings (and fuel economy) in the Guide. |
