Results are presented of a program to independently evaluate the gas phase mechanism developed for use in the second version of the Regional Acid Deposition Model (RADM-II). The RADM mechanism was tested by comparing predictions against results of over 550 environmental chamber experiments carried out at the University of California at Riverside and at the University of North Carolina. Statistical summaries of the overall results and results for individual experiments are presented and discussed. A series of 90 test problems for use in sensitivity calculations to assess effects of alternative assumptions for gas-phase mechanisms used in regional models was also developed and used to test several condensation approaches for the RADM mechanism. As a result of the evaluation against chamber data and the sensitivity test calculations, recommendations were made for modifications to the RADM mechanism. Two modified RADM mechanisms, one involving primarily changes in parameter values and one where more extensive changes and use of fewer model species are involved, were developed. These modified mechanisms and their performance in simulating the chamber data and the sensitivity test problems are discussed.
