Abstract | Since stagnating anticyclones are often associated with incidents of heavy air pollution in urban areas, a 30-year climatology is presented to delineate occurrences of stagnating anticyclones in the eastern United States. Occurrences of stagnation are determined on the basis of pressure-gradient values considered with other meteorological factors. Affected areas are depicted on maps by use of a system of grid points. Data showing cases of stagnation (i.e., episodes) and total days of stagnation indicate that stagnation is most likely to occur in autumn months. (Author) |
