Abstract |
The Analytical Quality Control Laboratory of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), conducted a preliminary interlaboratory study on analysis of organic and inorganic mercury by the cold vapor technique. Sample concentrates were prepared at four mercury levels and furnished to the analysts with the known values. Analysts added an aliquot of each concentrate to distilled water and to a surface water of their choice. Single analyses were made on the distilled and on the surface water samples with and without the known increments, using the EPA Method and a method of their choice (Other Method). Recoveries were compared. The accuracy and precision of the methods were noted as were interferences from natural water samples. In this comparative study, the EPA Method was equal or superior to the Other Method in accuracy and precision in 80% of tests. More significantly, in those samples containing organic mercury, the EPA Method was equal or superior to the Other Method. This study indicates that if water samples contain mercury in organic form, a method involving a vigorous digestion step such as that in the EPA Method must be used to obtain a good recovery. |
