Abstract | The Clare Water Supply site is the public water supply system for the city of Clare, Clare County, Michigan. The Clare Water Supply system withdraws ground water from four municipal wells (MW) in the site wellfield, each tapping an unconsolidated sand aquifer. In 1981, ground water sampling revealed contaminants including chlorinated hydrocarbons in two of the wells. Soil samples extracted from this industrial area indicate soil contaminated with TCE and DCE. EPA's study determined that the major source of ground water contamination resulted from contaminants leaching out of soil on the industrial properties, entering a shallow perched aquifer. The first, Operable Unit One (OU1), an interim remedy addressing TCE contamination of the drinking water supply, will be implemented in this Record of Decision (ROD). A subsequent ROD will address OU2, the remaining ground water contaminants as well as soil contamination. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including TCE. |
