Abstract | A series of nationally coordinated field studies was conducted to provide crop exposure-response data representative of the areas in which they were conducted. A network of field sites was established in regions where ten field crops (corn, soybeans, wheat, hay, tobacco, sorghum, cotton, barley, peanuts and dry beans), accounting for roughly 85% of U.S. acreage, are planted. Ozone exposure-response experiments were conducted for each. When funding permitted, additional independent variables were included in the field experiments (e.g., water stress or other pollutants). Physiological measurements were taken during the growing season when possible, to aid in interpreting results and modeling interactions of independent variables. Response functions so generated and interpreted were used in an economic assessment of the consequences of ozone exposure to U.S. field crops. |
