Abstract
An assessment of The Best Available Technology Economically Achievable (BATEA) for treatment of synthetic rubber manufacturing wastewaters has been conducted. This assessment was based on feasibility tests with actual wastewater samples, both end-of-pipe (untreated) and after primary and secondary treatment. The wastewater samples investigated were collected at representative facilities for manufacture of emulsion crumb, solution crumb and latex rubbers. The physical-chemical treatment processes examined included dual-media depth filtration (DDMDF) and ultrafiltration (UF) for suspended solids removal; activated carbon adsorption (ACA), reverse osmosis (RO) and ozonation for removal of dissolved contaminants; and ozonation as a polishing step after RO or ACA for removal of refractory organics. The proposed BATEA sequence of DMDF followed by ACA was examined for treatment of wastewater samples collected after secondary treatment. In addition, various combinations of the processes identified above were evaluated for both treatment of end-of-pipe effluents and secondary treated effluents. Based on an assessment of process technical feasibility and estimates of wastewater treatment costs preferred options for control technologies were selected.
