Abstract | Integral photosynthetic rates and growth rates of phytoplankton were measured before, during, and after a bloom of Aphanizomenon, which occurred in August 1970. The size of the population increased during the bloom despite decreasing specific production rates, probably because the dominant algal became more buoyant and decreased its sinking rate. The effects of changing the specific production rates and specific loss rates are demonstrated by comparing the integral photosynthetic rates and chlorophyll concentrations that would prevail under steady state conditions. |
