Abstract |
The problem of disposing of primary and secondary sludge from municipal wastewater treatment facilities is one of growing concern. Municipal wastewater sludges contain toxic compounds such as heavy metals and various organic species. Viable sludge disposal options include methods of land disposal and incineration. Emission limits for total hydrocarbons have been proposed as a way to limit organic compound emissions from sludge incinerators. Continuous emission monitors have been proposed to measure total hydrocarbon emissions. The Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory and the Office of Water sponsored the program to evaluate the long term performance of such monitors at two wastewater sludge incinerators. The following document presents the results of that research program. |
