Contents Notes |
Explores the profound influence of Papa Mau (Mau Piailug), who revived non-instrument navigation in Hawai'i and brought back Polynesia's voyaging tradition from the brink of extinction. His 1976 voyage from Hawai'i to Tahiti in the traditional Polynesian sailing canoe "Håokåule°a" signaled a revival of native identity through the rediscovery of lost naviagtional knowledge. Other voyages, including from Hawai°i to Satawal in the sailing canoe "Alingano Maisu," are discussed, and interviews conducted with Papa Mau, his family members and many supporters. |
